Spent the night and day having a last hurrah with Sarah in Beaune and then in Nuits-St. Georges. Got in around 7:30 and we cooked a lardon quiche together, which we started and ended the night with. Decided to check out this amazingly cheap wine bar which looked interesting and was the first thing I saw upon coming to Beaune for the first time, several months ago.
Started with a glass of Chablis which we almost decided was enough, but at the last minute decided to get one more. Before we were able to leave the bar, we were pounced on by some local barmen because of our “out of town” accents. Between the 42-year old drunk guy trying to pick me up and asking the same questions over and over, and somehow getting that we were from Wisconsin, to the other younger French guys and one Polish guy who joined us chatting our ears off in the most butchered Frenglish I’ve ever heard, there was never a dull moment. Only in France…
We stayed well after closing time to finish off our glasses, which were almost never empty the entire night and to chat with the bartender and try on his hat collection that was mounted on the wall. Also was shown a photo of a French girl that is literally my doppelganger. At first, I thought the photo was taken of me at the bar without me knowing, it was that identical.. Quite strange.
At some point an American guy on his thirty-fifth visit here came over and started chatting to us, sounding like some hip Dad. Apparently he’s an all-time wine guy and is touring the area with some famous author. And it’s so unfortunate he never decided to buy a place here… blah blah blah. He leaves.
The guys got a bottle or two for us all and proceeded to get more drunk and get more hilarious. Talked about hot air balloons, brass knuckles, our work, wine, Boston duck tours, French, and the other random topics that disappeared with the wine and smoke. The music selection was amazing from Canned Heat which made my night, to Fleet Foxes, James Brown, The Kinks, and so on… Finally the bartender shut everything down around three and we got a ride back from the Polish guy and the other young, incredibly attractive guys, whose nickname is Mojo… wow.
Sarah and I came back to eat cold quiche and listen to Etta James. I slept like a baby but had crazy dreams of my French life mixed with Game of Thrones. bahhh.
Woke up and took my first bath in seven months. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Today, we traveled to Nuits St. Georges to tour the town and do a wine tasting. The sun was coming out every five minutes and the other five, it would rain. Strange weather. We got a free tasting and both splurged on really great wines. I got a Fixin Premier Cru 2006 which won’t be ready until at least Christmas. I’m very excited for it.
My spirits are high.
